MWAA Rail Proposal Wins Backers

After winning the endorsements of local business groups in recent weeks, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority President and CEO James E. Dulles prepares to start work on fourth runway

One of the biggest pieces of Dulles International Airport's $3.4 billion upgrade is starting to take shape.

A request for proposals has been issued for tree clearing, excavation and other prep work for a fourth runway. And the federal government has agreed to help out in a big way -- U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta signed a letter of intent Feb. 21 to provide $200 million in federal funds toward the project's total cost of $356 million.

22,000 Jobs Added in Fairfax County in 2005

Businesses added 22,000 jobs to the Fairfax County economy last year, increasing the county's total job count to 622,000, according to a study conducted by Stephen Fuller at the George Mason University Center for
Regional Analysis
. Fairfax County includes many of the DC region's major
technology hubs including McLean, Reston, Herndon and Fairfax. Fuller said
the entire DC region gained 82,000 jobs during the year.
The Fairfax County
Economic Development Authority (FCEDA)
said significant job growth in the
county came from Science Applications International Corporation (2,027
jobs), Gray Hawk Systems (270 jobs), Omniplex World Services (250 jobs)
and Ciber (250 jobs). FCEDA said that it worked with 133 companies that
added more than 10,000 jobs, mostly in information technology and
professional services. Nine major companies relocated their headquarters to
the county during the year.
